Summer Holidays!

Hello Mams, Dads, Boys & Girls,

I am sad to say that we have come to our final week. Thank you all for your hard work over the past few months. I am very proud of you and all the work that you have been doing. I know that it hasn’t always been easy, but you have tried your best and that is the most important thing.

I will miss receiving pictures and videos of your wonderful work which always brightened up my day. I would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to all the parents who did a fantastic job guiding you each day with your lessons. Your support meant the world to us as teachers.

We are all hopeful that normality will return soon, and we look forward to getting back to school in September.

Until then enjoy the Summer Holidays!!!

Stay safe and keep well!

15th - 19th June Virtual School Tour

Hello again boys and girls! Thank you for continuing with your school work – despite the lovely weather outside. We are almost there and you have all been fantastic over the past couple of months. Everyone has made a great effort to complete work every week and I am very proud of you all.

Unfortunately, we cannot go on our usual school tour this year - so the next best thing is a virtual trip. I know how much you love animals so this week we will be visiting some zoos around the world. You will be able to see what they get up to when they think no one is watching, what they eat and how they are cared for. There are also games and activities for you to try. In addition, we have a story about where the zoo animals might go to on their summer holidays.

If you have unfinished pages in your workbooks, you could complete them over the next few weeks and don’t forget to keep up your reading.

I hope you have a lovely week and enjoy your virtual school trip.

Mrs O’Neill.

 S.E.S.E – Bird Watching

Now that you have looked at some of the birds and heard their different songs. Why don’t you do your own little bit of bird watching in your garden. You can use the sheet below to record all the different birds that you were able to see. Good luck and have fun. Click for a bigger version.

S.E.S.E   BIRD WATCHING

Have you noticed that when you go outside you can hear lots of birds singing? Watch this video from Dublin zoo. It will help you to recognise what some of these birds look and sound like. (Robin, blue-tit, blackbird and blue finch)

Did you know that each bird has a different song? After watching the video, you will be able to recognise the different songs.

Birds love to have a dip in water. Perhaps you could build your own little bird bath.  If you are lucky you might have many thirsty or hot birds visit your garden. Watch this video to get some ideas.

2nd June - 5th June

Hello boys and girls, I hope you are all happy and enjoying the wonderful weather that we are having.  This week you are invited to take part in Scoil Bhríde’s remote sports week! There are sport activities for each day of the week. You will also find some lovely colouring pages to download. Remember to wear your hats and sun cream if you are outside playing in the sunshine. Drink plenty of water and try not to stay out under the hot sun for too long. Take a break in the cool shade.

I hope that you enjoyed some of the activities from last week. Thank you so much for sending me your fantastic work. Your handwriting is very good and I love reading your weekly news.

This week you will find a new story called ‘When a dragon moves in’ and also some bird watching tasks. I hope that you enjoy these and have a go at making your own bird bath.

Now that you have some of your school books at home.  It would be nice if you could complete some pages from your Sounds like Phonics and maths books.  I have included some pages from your books this week.

Take care everyone and don’t forget to keep up the regular handwashing. Try your best to help Mammy and Daddy and be kind and caring to each other.

Until next week,

Mrs. O’Neill

Listen to Mark Duplass read the story ‘When a Dragon moves in’

Before you read the story think about the following questions:

What do you think the story is about?

In this story, a dragon moves into a boy’s sandcastle. What do you think the dragon is going to do?

Listen to the singing walrus singing the song ‘I love Summertime’. When you finish watching the song you might like to discuss all the things that you and your child like about the summer.

Literacy – Reading

Click on these pictures and read these stories with your child.

You could engage your child with the following reading strategies to encourage them.

Choral Reading. You read at the same time.

Echo Reading.   You read first and your child echoes the same sentence or paragraph you just read.

Act It Out.      You act out the story together or pretend to be characters in the story and read the lines.

Literacy – Writing (For Junior and Senior infants)

There are many exciting things about the summertime. There are lots of things to see when you go outside. The reading book above ‘At the Beach’ will give you some ideas for your writing.

Write a few lines on the writing frame below about different things that you can see in the summer. Click for a bigger version.

Tricky Word Games

Use your Tricky words to play the following games -

Tricky word reveal- This game requires two pieces of paper. Write a word from the list on a piece of paper. Then cover the word completely with the other piece of paper. Slowly reveal the first letter of the word.  Ask your child if they can guess what the word will be from looking at the first word.

Tricky Word Hunt – You could write a few of these words on pieces of paper and stick them up in a room in the house.  Call out one of the words and you child can go and search for it.

I Spy – Similar to the ‘Tricky Word Hunt’ You could have a few words stuck up in a room. Tell your child ‘I spy a word beginning with W. I spy a word ending in g’ etc.

Tricky Word Toss – This is a game that can be played outside but you could also play it indoors. Write a few tricky words on pieces of paper. Spread them out on the grass. Ask your child to throw something soft e.g a ball onto a word. They then run to the word that they have landed on and read it.

Show the following coins to your child – 1c,2c,5c,10c,20c.

Examine the size, colour, similarities and differences between these coins.

Can your child name them?

Can you play matching games with the coins?

Play shop and use coins to buy different items.
